Phillips Sets U.S. Watch Auction Record at $75.8 Million — Here Are the Watches That Stole the Show

With every lot sold and several seven-figure results, Phillips’ latest New York auction showcased the strength of today’s collector market.

The watch auction market has witnessed plenty of headline-grabbing moments over the last decade, but Phillips has just delivered one for the history books. The New York Watch Auction: XII achieved a staggering $75.8 million across two days, making it the highest-grossing watch auction ever held in the United States. Even more impressive, the sale achieved a remarkable 100 percent sell-through rate, with every single lot finding a buyer.

For seasoned collectors, the result confirms what has been building for years: the market for exceptional watches remains remarkably resilient, particularly when rarity, provenance, and historical significance converge. The auction featured everything from vintage Patek Philippe masterpieces and coveted Rolex Daytonas to some of the most sought-after creations from F.P. Journe, a brand that continues to dominate conversations at the highest end of the collecting world.

What made the sale especially fascinating was the diversity of the results. While vintage icons performed exactly as expected, independent watchmaking once again proved to be the market’s hottest category. Several F.P. Journe watches dramatically exceeded expectations, underscoring the growing influence of modern independents alongside traditional auction heavyweights.

Below are our standout picks from the record-breaking sale.

1. F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance “Souscription, No. 007”

The undisputed star of the auction was the extraordinary Chronomètre à Résonance Souscription No. 007. One of only 20 subscription pieces produced, the pink gold and platinum wristwatch features Journe’s legendary resonating escapement system and a distinctive pink gold dial. Estimated at over $1 million, the watch ultimately realized an astonishing $13,922,000, cementing its place among the most valuable F.P. Journe watches ever sold at auction.

2. Patek Philippe Ref. 5004G-020 “Eric Clapton”

Celebrity provenance continues to captivate collectors, especially when paired with a highly desirable reference. Formerly owned by Eric Clapton, this likely unique white gold Ref. 5004G-020 combines a perpetual calendar, split-seconds chronograph, moonphase display, and an exceptionally attractive rose-colored dial. Carrying an estimate of $700,000 to $1.4 million, it soared to $5,202,000.

3. F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Anniversaire “Hong Kong” No. 1 of 5

Few watches embody exclusivity quite like this titanium and pink gold Tourbillon Souverain Anniversaire. Produced in a limited run of just five pieces, the watch incorporates Journe’s celebrated constant-force remontoire and deadbeat seconds mechanism. Offered with the coveted number one designation, it achieved $4,355,000, comfortably surpassing its pre-sale estimate.

4. Patek Philippe Ref. 1518

Few references command the respect of the Ref. 1518. Widely regarded as one of the most important vintage Patek Philippe watches ever created, this exceptionally preserved pink gold perpetual calendar chronograph attracted fierce bidding before selling for $3,992,000, nearly doubling the lower estimate.

5. F.P. Journe Tourbillon Anniversaire Historique “T30”

Created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Journe’s first tourbillon pocket watch, the T30 has become one of the brand’s most historically significant limited editions. This example, numbered 93 of 99 pieces, realized $2,032,000, demonstrating collectors’ continued enthusiasm for milestone Journe creations.

6. F.P. Journe Chronomètre Souverain “Swiss FineTiming”

One of only eight examples ever produced for Swiss FineTiming, this platinum Chronomètre Souverain stood out with its distinctive silver and black dial accented by red lettering. With an estimate of just $100,000 to $200,000, the watch generated some of the auction’s most spirited bidding before selling for $1,968,500.

7. Rolex Ref. 6241 Cosmograph Daytona “John Player Special”

Vintage Rolex Daytonas remain a cornerstone of the collector market, and this beautifully preserved 14K yellow gold Ref. 6241 demonstrated exactly why. Featuring the coveted Paul Newman “John Player Special” exotic dial, the watch achieved $1,803,400, reinforcing the enduring appeal of Rolex’s most iconic chronograph.

8. Richard Mille RM52-01 Tourbillon “Skull, Piece Unique”

Representing the modern end of the collecting spectrum, Richard Mille’s unique RM52-01 Tourbillon delivered plenty of excitement. Combining pink gold, TZP nano-ceramic, and the model’s instantly recognizable gem-set skull motif, the piece sold for $1,397,000, proving that contemporary haute horlogerie remains a major force in today’s auction landscape.

A Defining Moment for the Collector Market

Beyond the eye-catching numbers, Phillips’ record-breaking $75.8 million result highlights a broader shift within high-end collecting. Independent watchmakers now command the same attention once reserved exclusively for vintage Patek Philippe and Rolex, while exceptional provenance and true rarity continue to drive fierce competition among buyers worldwide.

If this sale is any indication, the future of the auction market belongs to watches that tell a compelling story. Whether created by a legendary independent, owned by a music icon, or representing a landmark moment in horological history, collectors are increasingly willing to pay record prices for pieces that stand apart from the ordinary—and Phillips has just delivered the strongest evidence yet.
